Grey’s Anatomy’s Jason George Teases There Will Be ‘a Whole New Level of Friction’ Between Bailey and Ben

Jason George is teasing what’s ahead for his Grey’s Anatomy character Ben and his wife Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson).

On the Oct. 10 episode of the hit ABC medical drama, Sydney Heron (Kali Rocha) doubted Ben’s commitment to medicine after his stint as a firefighter during an interview for a new job at Grey Sloan Memorial. However, he wasn’t ready to give up.

“You want commitment, I’ve carried people down 10 flights of stairs [while] wearing 75 pounds of gear. You want patience, I convinced a helpless teen to step away from the ledge,” he told Sydney. “Stick-to-itiveness, I’ve been happily married for 12 years and I have three children that I love more than any career so if you want to bring me back, I’ll be fine.”

Ben ultimately won her and she gave him the job while Bailey returned to her former role as residency director at the hospital.

Now, George, 52, tells PEOPLE that seeing Ben “back in the blue scrubs” is “pretty exciting for me personally.”

However, the actor — who is now a series regular on Grey’s Anatomy after the ending of Station 19 — knows that there could be new challenges ahead as they will now be working together at the hospital.

“Ben and Bailey, the thing is she spent the last few years worrying about whether or not he was going to come home, and that’s what her worry’s been,” he explains. “And now that shifts, I think, to worrying about, ‘How’s he going to do? He hasn’t done this for a minute.’”

While George admits that Ben has “a lot of swagger and a lot of confidence and some of it’s warranted and some of it’s not,” he knows the dynamic between Bailey and Ben is likely to change with his new role.

“There’s going to be a whole new level of friction in their relationship because they’ve got to figure out what this [looks like]… They had just started to figure out what their working relationship was when he went out to become a firefighter, but now he’s coming in with a whole new level of confidence,” he adds.
